Wool

Wool work includes several operations which are all, except shearing, supervised by DBCwool, in collaboration with our partners, working on commission.


1. Shearing and collecting the wool on the farms.


We select the best wools for each of our customers, according to his needs and the final product.


We are constantly in contact with the breeders and the wool producers that we have selected after many on-site visits. Quality control at the first stage is, for us, a priority.



2. Sorting.


A large majority of our wools are table-sorted, according to cleanness, length, colour and fineness. Wool from britches and bellies are regularly rejected, because that wool is not clean enough, too yellow and lower in grade.




3. Scouring.


The raw wool contains impurities : insoluble grease (fat), from which lanoline is obtained, soluble grease (fatty acid salts), soil, faeces and vegetable matter (VM). Water and detergent during scouring dissolve the soluble grease and emulsify the fat and soil. Vegetable matter is eliminated mechanically.



The scouring line works slowly, assuring at each step, an efficient quality-control process.


This sophisticated scouring process is environmentally friendly and energy efficient. All detergents used are biodegradable.


The waste water is treated by an up-to-date water treatment unit, certified by the European Union.



4. Carding.


The carding opens and homogenises the wool, producing a regular fleece, which in successive coats, will make up the inside of the quilt or futon. It also eliminates, to a certain extent, some of the VM still remaining after scouring.
